Gadgets

This page contains what I consider gadgets. Things that aid in brewing but are not necessary to have. Even though I have some of them. :-)

O2 kit and pH meter

The item on the left is my oxygenation kit that I bought from Hoptech. The item on the right is my pHep3 meter from Hanna. I bought the meter through Cynmar Scientific Supplies The small, white bottle in the middle is foam control from Hoptech. I have not had the chance yet to use the foam control or the oxygenation kit. I plan on using the O2 for yeast starters and to oxygenate the wort before pitching my yeast. I just starting playing with the pH meter but have not used it in brewing a batch yet. I tested the pH of a couple of beers I was drinking at the time. :-)

Scales

These are the scales that I use for brewing. The small black one is a Deering 10gram scale purchased from Precision Weighing Balances. I use it to weight brewing salts when I am not feeling lazy or am feeling a bit anal. Otherwise I just use the old teaspoon method for measuring salts. The larger scale is a Pitney Bowes postal scale purchased from B.G. Micro. I use it to weigh my hops (whole or pellet) and to weigh priming sugar when I am not being lazy. It can only weigh 1 pound in .1 oz increments but for $16, including shipping, you can't complain.

thermometer

Here is the thermometer that I use. It is also my timer. Notice the Heat shrink(yellow). Picked that tip up from the HomeBrew Digest. This thermometer works great. I received a catalog from Cynmar the other day and they have one similar to this for $29. The only difference is that theirs lays flat and the display tilts up to help prevent dropping it.

Complete Culture Kit

This is the Complete Yeast Culturing Kit from Brewer's Resource. I have been using it for a few months now. It is fairly easy to culture your own yeast and it is nice to always have the yeast available at home. One of the main reasons I purchased this is so I can have Rogue's Pacman yeast available without having to get it from the bottle everytime. I don't pour my own slants or anything yet so I order pre-poured plates and slants from Brewer's Resource too.
